4 Killer Tips on Promoting Content through Social Media

4 Killer Tips on Promoting Content through Social Media

On a cold, rainy afternoon on the first day of October, two writers from Vancouver began writing blog posts on how to take advantage of Google’s new search algorithm, “Hummingbird.” Both writers had impeccable writing styles and immense experience in content creation. However, one had significantly more views than the other. What went wrong?

Answer: inadequate social media promotion. The writer with fewer readership didn’t promote his blog post effectively on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+. This inhibited him from attaining social share and gaining substantial circulation.

To avoid making the same mistakes as the writer with the lower readership, here are four tips you can use to effectively distribute content on social media:

  1. Listen first, and then write.

Before you start writing content, it’s recommended that you first listen to what your readers are saying on the Web and understand what intrigues them. This will help you formulate articles that resonate with their needs. For instance, if you’re a Vancouver tourism blogger and you discover that a vast majority of your readers are going to Whistler for Christmas, you can publish an article on the different activities your readers can do on the mountain. This will help you gain readership and social share as your readers will likely share the piece with friends who are seeking similar advice.

  2. Pose questions in your social statuses.

You can ask questions in your social statuses when sharing content to build curiosity. For instance, instead of saying “Check out this article for places to visit in Whistler,” you can ask “Want to know the best places to visit in Whistler?” to generate interests from your readers. While the former can still generate moderate traffic as the bluntness of the headline can capture some readers’ attention, the latter cultivates a sense of curiosity and can entice more readers to irresistibly read your content.

  3. Use nanotargeting to promote to specific individuals.

You can use nanotargeting on Facebook to target particular readers. Nanotargeting is defined by Likeable Social Media as “a concept similar to hypertargeting but with search criteria so narrow that you can target one individual amongst hundreds of millions.” With nanotargeting, you can use Facebook’s advertising filters to push your content to specific readers who are more likely to read your articles based on their age, interests, education, and so forth. Now with Facebook’s tweak in its advertising algorithm to help advertisers better reach qualified prospects, nanotargeting will become an even more powerful tool.

  4. Ask your fans to spread the good word.

You can ask your social followers to share your content on their Facebook, Twitter, or Google+ pages to help you spread the good word! In traditional marketing, if a customer gives you positive feedback about your products or services, you will first thank him for the kind words and then ask him to let his friends know about your goods or services. Now with the advent of social networks, you can ask your supporters to share your content with hundreds or even thousands of people online. This will not only help boost your readership, but also allow you to convert more consumers or readers into brand advocates. With this strengthened brand loyalty, you will be able to improve your circulation in the long run.

Social media promotion is becoming increasingly important in today’s digital age. By effectively using social media approaches, you can instantly share your content with thousands or even millions of users worldwide with just a click of a button. And by using the four tips above, you will be able to further solidify your fan base and make your social media promotion even more effective in the future.
