What Facebook's New Algorithm Mean for Digital Marketers

Facebook yesterday announced its new algorithm which will show more articles on mobile news feeds. According to Facebook, users enjoy engaging, seeing high-quality articles on the social network. This means that articles that get more Likes and comments on mobile devices will appear more often on Facebook’s News Feed. Moreover, now if your friends post, Like, or click articles on their smartphones or tablets, you’ll also see them on your own feed. Conversely, entertaining images such as memes will show less frequently and rank lower in the News Feed. Here’s what Facebook has to say about the new release:

Our surveys show that on average people prefer links to high quality articles about current events, their favorite sports team or shared interests, to the latest meme. Starting soon, we’ll be doing a better job of distinguishing between a high quality article on a website versus a meme photo hosted somewhere other than Facebook when people click on those stories on mobile. This means that high quality articles you or others read may show up a bit more prominently in your News Feed, and meme photos may show up a bit less prominently.

This is great news for content marketers. By creating articles that resonate with your target market and increase chance of acquiring more likes, comments, and clicks, you can enhance your exposure to consumers who are alike your current market. This ultimately reduces your need for using Facebook advertising products to disseminate your Facebook or website page to a particular audience. Instead, you can use captivating articles to capture the attention of consumers who are more likely to fit your targeted demographics, psychographics, and geographic.
